Located approximately 25 miles north of Chicago, the Deerfield suburb was originally settled in 1835 as the town of Cadwell’s Corner. Deerfield is situated in Lake County with a small portion extending into Cook County.

When Lake County began forming its settlements into townships in 1849, the town was renamed Deerfield in part after the town of Deerfield in Massachusetts—the hometown of prominent settler John Millen—and due to the bountiful deer population in the area. 

Transportation in Deerfield

Deerfield is very well connected to arterial roadways and interstate highways, as well as metra stations.

Deerfield has two Metra stations connecting it to Chicago Union Station, Deerfield and Lake Cook Road, both on the Milwaukee District/North Line.

Deerfield is served by Deerfield School District 109, which operates four public elementary schools:

• Kipling Elementary School

• South Park Elementary School

• Walden Elementary School

• Wilmot Elementary School

Two public middle schools:

• Caruso Middle School

• Shepard Middle School

And when it comes to high schools, the majority of Deerfield’s children go on to attend Deerfield High School; however, a small portion attend Highland Park High School.

Deerfield High School has consistently been ranked as a top school in the state.

Colleges and Universities

Trinity International University, a private Christian university, is headquartered in Deerfield. 

Located on their Deerfield campus is Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. 

The headquarters of the World Evangelical Alliance is also co-located on the Deerfield Campus.

• The outdoor museum of Deerfield Historic Village includes five historic buildings.
  
  It includes the Caspar Ott House, considered to be the oldest building in Lake County, built in 1837. It was restored by Bob Przewlocki.
  
  The George Luther House (1847) now includes the Society’s offices and Visitor Center.
  
  The Bartle Sacker Farmhouse (1854) is a typical 19th century home.
  
  While those buildings are all original (although relocated from their original sites), the carriage house and little red schoolhouse are replicas.

Fun Facts about Deerfield, IL

• Colt Cabana, professional wrestler, was raised in Deerfield.
• Duje Dukan, professional basketball player, attended Deerfield High School.
• In 1979, Deerfield created a “No-Kissing Zone” at the local train station in response to complaints about traffic jams at the station caused by couples taking too long to kiss their goodbyes at the drop-off point.
• A number of media properties have been set and/or filmed in Deerfield, including television drama Once and Again, comedy Married… with Children and portions of reality show American High.
• The village was identified as the hometown of Kitty Pryde in the X-Men comics.
• Deerfield hasone sister city – Lüdinghausen in Germany.
